Lieutenant colonel
3rd Field Artillery Brigade
Born 08 September 1880 at Adelaide, South Australia
Son of William Nicholas WAITE & Anna nee WESTON.
Studio portrait of Lieutenant Colonel William Charles Waite (DSO) (MC). Born in 1880, Waite was educated at St Bartholomew's Church of England School, Norwood, and Prince Alfred College, Adelaide before joining the South Australian Garrison Artillery (militia) in 1897. With the outbreak of the South African War, Waite embarked for active service in November 1899 as a corporal with the 1st South Australian Contingent. After twelve months of campaigning he returned home and re-enlisted with the 6th (Imperial Bushmen) South Australian Contingent in 1901 as a lieutenant. The unit operated in Transvaal, Cape Colony and the Orange River Colony, and Waite was mentioned in despatches. Following the war, he kept up his military associations as a second lieutenant and then a lieutenant in the field artillery. Waite joined the Australian Imperial Force as a lieutenant on 20 August 1914 and was posted to the 3rd Field Artillery Brigade; shortly before embarkation he was promoted captain and transferred to the 3rd Field Artillery Brigade Ammunition Column. His unit landed at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915 and Waite served there until the evacuation in December, first commanding the 7th Field Artillery Battery and then the 8th. For his Gallipoli service he was awarded the Military Cross and was mentioned in dispatches. After a brief time in staff appointments in Egypt, Waite was transferred in March 1916 to the newly formed 4th Division, AIF, as lieutenant-colonel commanding the 24th Field Artillery Brigade. In June he embarked for France and the brigade went into action at Bois Grenier and Fromelles, and at Ypres, Belgium. Waite took command of the 11th Field Artillery Brigade from January 1917. He served as an artillery brigade and group commander in operations on the Somme, at Bullecourt, Ypres, Messines, Dernancourt and Villers-Bretonneux, received the Distinguished Service Order, particularly for his work at Fromelles, Ypres and the Somme, and was again mentioned in dispatches. In August 1918 he was invalided home to Adelaide. He retained his commission in the militia and in 1926-30 commanded the 10th Battalion (Adelaide Rifles). In the Second World War he resumed full-time military duties, initially as camp commandant at Wayville and Woodside, and later as deputy director of recruiting at Keswick Barracks, Adelaide. At 90 he presided over the last memorial meeting of Boer War veterans. He was especially well known as chief marshal on Anzac Days in Adelaide; mounted on a dapple-grey charger, he led the parade on twenty-nine occasions

Subsequent investigations, however, showed that Pte Walsh had been killed in action at Fleurbaix, near Fromelles on 20 July 1916. Pte Walsh's two older brothers also enlisted: 220 Pte Francis Raphael Walsh, who enlisted on the same day, and also in the 32nd Battalion; and 12688 Private George Leslie Walsh, 11th Field Ambulance. Both survived the war.

Lieutenant
No. 36 Squadron, R.A.F.
He was awarded the Military Cross in January, 1918 “for conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He carried out a large number of night bomb raids on enemy headquarters, aerodromes and railways with great success. Many of these flights were carried out in bad weather and at very low altitude. On one occasion, although he had engine trouble and his radiator burst when he was over the enemy lines, he continued his flight and bombed a railway station from 1500 feet. He set a fine example of determination to his squadron.” He was later recommended for a bar to his cross.
After surviving a year of night bombing operations in France he was rotated for a rest on “home defence” duties. He was conducting instructional duties when he was killed in a flying accident at Ashington Aerodrome, just outside Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

WHITE, Stephen William
Corporal Stephen William White (8427) was born 18th Nov 1883, Glanville, Port Adelaide, a third generation ‘colonial’. He was the first member of his family to travel back to Europe since his great grandparents arrived in the colony of South Australia sixty six years earlier. At 31 years old, White joined the first AIF on the 13th July, 1915 that was to serve in Egypt, France and Belgium in WW1. Upon enlistment at Keswick, he states he is 30 and a ‘Bridge Carpenter’. The enrolment officer’s description: dark complexion, brown eyes, dark hair, 5ft 9in and 148lb, tattoo both forearms, single.
July 1915 was also the peak time for enlistment in the war in Australia, with three times as many enlistments as in the previous month, spurred by the news of the Gallipoli landing, the June announcement that there had been 10,000 Australian casualties, and the June call from Britain of ‘every available man wanted.’ This group who enlisted after the casualty figures were announced were known as the ‘fair dinkums’ as they knew their chances of survival.
White served in the 18th Battery, 6th Field Artillery Brigade, first Australian Imperial Force. The battery first trained as the 34th Battery at Artillery Base Camp at Mitcham. They later transferred to Glen Osmond for further training where it became the 18th Battery led by Major Dean (later Colonel), and then left Adelaide on the 18th October, 1915 to join and form the 6th Field Artillery Brigade in Essendon North, Victoria. A larger group comprising Victorians and Tasmanians then formed the 6th brigade, including the 16th, 17th and 18th Batteries. The brigade left Australia on the 22nd November 1915 via Port Melbourne on the cargo passenger liner Persic. The 18th Battery 6th Field Artillery Brigade was declared to be the ‘first and only complete Field Artillery Battery to go on active service from South Australia.’
On 6th June 1918, White was sent back to Australia via the ship ‘Barambah’ departing from Liverpool with ‘Debility - Trench Fever’. He had a total army service of 3 years and 91 days, and service abroad was 2 years and 252 days. Though sent back with '6 months to live', White went on to live for another fifty years.

A carpenter prior to enlistment, he embarked with B Company from Adelaide aboard HMAT Ascanius on 20 October 1914. The 10th Battalion was among the covering force for the ANZAC landing at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915. Moving with his unit to France in April 1916, he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant the following month. On 25 July 1916 Sgt Wickham's unit took part in an attack at Pozieres. He was recommended for the award of a Military Medal for leading a party along the parapet and throwing bombs into a German trench, continuing until it was taken despite suffering a leg injury. After his leg was dressed, Sgt Wickham assisted in carrying a badly wounded man to the aid post, carrying him for part of the way on his back. Shortly after the battle he was reported wounded and missing in action. Despite extensive enquiries made by the Australian Red Cross Wounded and Missing Bureau, they were unable to establish his fate or whereabouts. The Australian military authorities later listed 2nd Lieutenant Wickham as killed in action on 25 July 1916, aged 21. He was posthumously awarded the Military Medal on 27 October 1916.

At 36 and above recruitment age, Ted joined the Australian Red Cross –paying his own way to the Western Front in France, though with a bit of help from friends – such as the people of Benalla, who generously raised funds for a Chevrolet car, which he used widely in France. His service was warmly appreciated by the ANZACs and Brits in France and England –as per a letter of appreciation in 1919.
Ted returned via America and on the way saw Californian bungalows – after returning to Australia, he went into land development and introduced this house style to Adelaide, in Tusmore and Burnside – plus the then village of Beaumont. His hobby was raising pigs – including introducing the now rare Wessex Saddleback breed to Australia.

WOODS, James Park
PTE JAMES PARK WOODS, VC, Regimental No. 3244, 48th Battalion, 12th Brigade
James Park Woods, soldier and orchardist, was born on 4 January 1886 at Two Wells, South Australia, son of James Woods, blacksmith, and his wife Ester Scott, née Johnson. After his parents' death James was reared by a stepsister and, with his brothers, worked on a vineyard. Soon after war broke out in 1914 Woods tried to enlist in Adelaide, but was rejected because of his height (5 ft 4 ins, 163 cm). He travelled to Western Australia with his brother Will, and carted timber and fenced in the Katanning area before becoming a vigneron at Caversham. Following further unsuccessful attempts, James eventually enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force on 29 September 1916 when the height requirements had been lowered. He left Australia in December as a reinforcement for the 48th Battalion. Having spent two periods in hospital in Britain, he reached France in September 1917, only to be invalided on and off until August 1918.
He was 27 years old, and a private in the 48th Battalion, (S.A.), when the following deed took place for which he was awarded the VC:
On 18 September the 48th Battalion attacked the Hindenburg outpost line near Le Verguier, north-west of St Quentin. It took its objective, but British troops on the Australian flank were held up and a company of the 48th was sent in support. Ordered on patrol, Woods and two companions discovered a German post comprising six machine-guns and over thirty troops. Without waiting for the force which was being organized to assault the strong-point, Woods led his small party against it. One German was wounded, another was captured and the rest of the garrison fled. The Germans then counter-attacked. Despite heavy fire, Woods climbed onto the parapet and, while lying there, held off successive attacks by throwing bombs handed to him by his companions. So effective was his defence that, when Australian reinforcements arrived, they were easily able to secure the post. Woods was awarded the Victoria Cross for his part in the action.
Returning to Australia in August 1919, he took up a small vineyard and orchard in the Swan Valley. On 30 April 1921 at the Caversham Methodist Church, Perth, he married Olive Adeline Wilson. Like many veterans of the A.I.F., Woods did not return home unscathed: he was plagued with ill health as a result of gassing and chest infections in the trenches. In 1937 he was granted a full pension and, although given only a few years to live, enjoyed a quiet retirement for the next twenty-six years. A keen cricketer when younger, Woods now took up fishing as a hobby. For a time he was president of the Caversham sub-branch of the Returned Sailors', Soldiers' and Airmen's Imperial League of Australia. In 1956 he joined other Australian V.C. winners in attending the V.C. centenary celebrations in London.
His sons Gordon and Norman served in the Royal Australian Air Force during World War II; Gordon (the first-born) was killed in October 1943. Late in life Woods lived at Claremont, Perth. Survived by his wife, three sons and three daughters, he died on 18 January 1963 in Hollywood Repatriation Hospital and was buried in Karrakatta cemetery. A ward at the hospital has been named in his honour.
