A manufacturing chemist by profession, he worked in NSW and Victoria after arrival in Australia and married Ada Dent of Adelaide, SA. They had eight children: six boys and two girls. In 1915 he put his age down to 43 and enlisted in the AIF under the alias George Albert Edward Fraser because he "found it impossible to join the Forces under the name of Schmahl". He embarked for service on 5 October 1915 with the 6th Reinforcements, 21st Battalion. He transferred to the 7th Battalion in February 1916 and was promoted to corporal, was wounded at Pozieres, returned to his unit and was promoted to lance sergeant then sergeant. He was wounded at Geudecourt. In February 1917 he was returned to Australia suffering "excessive age and cardiac debility" (he was aged 53). In the field he had confessed to his commanding officer Lieutenant Colonel C H Jess that he was serving under an alias and had received the reply "I have no time for private conversations, I only know you as Fraser, you will do me". After his return to Australia he wrote to Senator George Pearce, Minister of Defence, explaining his position and offering himself for further service; this offer was declined on the grounds of age. He attempted to join the Naval Guard and Instructional Staff School and on 28 August 1918 he joined the Home Service working as a clerk at the Base Hospital under the name of Fraser. He was denounced as a spy by someone and he dictated an affidavit that outlined his loyalty and prior military service along with that of his family. From 1924-1930 and 1933-1936 Adolph Schmahl was appointed to translate German files for the Public Service, Territory of New Guinea. Three of his sons enlisted in the AIF: Gottlieb, served as 420 George Schmahl (awarded Military Medal) and brothers Victor Hugo Schmahl and Gordon lionel Schmahl enlisted in the Sportsmans Thousand, serving with the 46th Battalion.

SEAGER, Edward Clarendon DCM

Picture
mid Sergeant 185
4 Light Horse Regiment (A Squadron)
Enlisted Broadmeadows 20 August 1914. Embarked Melbourne per HMAT A18 Wiltshire on 18 October 1914.
Service – Egypt, Gallipoli, Palestine. Promoted Lance Corporal 27 September 1915; Corporal 7 December 1915; and Sergeant 25 June 1916. Mentioned in Despatches vide London Gazette of 22 January 1919, page 1164. The recommendation for the award states:
This NCO was one of the last to leave Black Hill, Jordon Valley on the morning of 4 July 1918, during the retirement of his squadron from that position. As he was leaving his sanger No. 937 Trooper Good was shot through the head, destroying the sight of one eye. Sergeant Seager then under very heavy machine gun and rifle fire, carried down the hill into the gulley in the rear, taking him right back to the Fioeld Ambulance which was already on the move. This NCO acted as Troop Leader throughout the operation and was at all times a fine example of indomitable courage and keenness, keeping a hold on his command in a manner deserving the highest praise.
Several months later his conduct came under notice once again and as a consequence, was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal vide London Gazette of 25 February 1929, page 2303. The recommendation for the award clearly illustrates his gallantry:
The exceptional gallantry and devotion to duty on 30th September 1918 at Raukab when the squadron was the first wave of a mounted attack against enemy infantry and machine guns, this Sergeant acting as Troop Leader, led his troops with great dash and vigour, setting a fine example of determination and daring to all ranks, resulting in the capture of many prisoners and machine guns.

Picture
Captain
10 Battalion (2  Rfns)
Enlisted 19 August 1914. Embarked
Melbourne per HMAT A46 Clan  McGillivary on 2 February 1915.
Service –  Egypt, Gallipoli, Western Front.
Taken on strength 50 Battalion 26 February 1916.
Awarded the military Cross vide  London Gazette of 18 June 1917, page 6005.
The recommendation encapsulates this officers outstanding performance of his duties:
At Noreiul on the 2nd and 3rd  April 1917, this officer was in charge of the reserve Company of the Battalion.  During the attack the right flank of the Battalion met exceptionally strong opposition and suffered heavy casualties which prevented them from linking up  with the Battalion on the right. In this gap the enemy made three local  counter-attacks and threatened to dislodge the rest of our line. On receiving  orders to assist the right flank Captain Seager rapidly got his Company forward  scarcely losing a man. On arrival he counter-attacked with such effect that the  right flank was relieved of the hostile pressure. He then siezed positions from  which he could effectively cover the whole of the gap and established touch with  the right Battalion.
During the night he pushed forward posts and securely  linked up. The next day he went out and made a personal reconnaissance which  resulted in getting the whole Brigade front further forward. Later he took over  a wider front, relieving the Companys which had been more heavily engaged. He  then pushed his patrols forward some 1500 yards and cleared up the ground. This enabled the Brigade front to advance another 1500 yards. Throughout the operations he handled his Company with great skill, bolness and  promptness.
Wounded in action 10 June 1917, remained on duty. Promoted Major  23 July 1917.
Wounded in action 26 September 1917, gunshot wound to his neck.
Returned to Australia per Karoola on 10 January 1918.
Appointment terminated on 25 January 1918. Embarked Sydney per HMAT A41 Bakara on 4 September 1918
as  Offficer in Charge Sea Transport. Returned to Australia per City of York on 21  January 1919. Appointment terminated on 10 July 1919.
Age 25 years 1 month,  Bank Officer, single, Church of England. He was 5'9½" and weighed 140 pounds.
Born at Inglewood.

It is the silver Victory Medal, with King George Vth head on the reverse.
Bought from an Arab in the Old Town of Mombasa, Kenya about 20 years ago.
When enquired about the medal it was supposed to have come from Malindi -  from a former servant of Capt Southon's, who had fallen on hard times.
So rather mysterious!  The medal has turned up a long way from home!

Do you known what happened to this soldier?

Whilst his battery was in action, it was heavily bombarded by the enemy with gas hells, and Sgt. Stewart has badly gassed, but declined to leave his post, as the strenghth of the battery had been much reduced by casualties.  At a later date of the engagement, when the whole of the gun detachment had become casualties from the explosion of a hostile shell, he went, without hesitation and on his own initiative, to the gun, and kept it in action until another detachment arrived.  The fine example of this capable and fearless N.C.O. was worthy of the highest praise.

Son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Monks SULLIVAN, Crystal Brook, South Australia, and before joining the colours was on the staff of the National Bank in South Australia, having served at Gladstone, Broken Hill (New South Wales), and Maitland.  He enlisted in April, 1918, having previously been unable to get away, and left Melbourne in July of that year.  He arrived in England too late to parcipage in the fighting in France, but offered his services when volunteers were wanted for the Archangel front, declaring that he must see some fighting before he returned to Australia.
His was the first Victoria Cross won in North Russia.  the special bravery for which he was awarded this coveted distinction is reported as follows:-
"After fighting a rear-guard action, the covering platoon was forced to cross the Sheika River on a narrow plank, and a officer and three men fell into the water.  Corporal Sullivan without hesitation dived into a deep and treacherous swamp, and, despite the intense fire of the enemy, who were less than 100 yards distant, rescued his four comrades, who otherwise would inevitably have been drowned, as they were unable to swim.  This splendid example of heroism was an inspiration to all ranks, who were on the point of exhaustion."
Corporal Sullivan resumed Bank duty on the 9th February, 1920
Reported accidentally killed 09 April 1937 in London.
