Commended -
For gallantry and devotion to duty. During the capture of LIHONS by the 10th Battalion on 11 August 1918 Private Pearman was in charge of a party of Signallers who connected the front line Companies to Bn. H Q by telephone under heavy shell fire. Heavy enemy shelling continually broke the line but he repaired it time after time until he was badly wounded in the eye. His coolness and daring in following close up in the rear of the advancing Companies enabled communication to be quickly established and his splendid behaviour throughout the day undoubtedly proved a great incentive to the men of his section to do their best.

A 44 year old carpenter prior to enlistment on 29 September 1915, he embarked with the 3rd Reinforcements from Adelaide on 7 February 1916 aboard HMAT Miltiades. Pte Perry was killed in action at the battle of Fromelles, France on 19 July 1916 at the age of 46. After the war his grave could not be located and he was commemorated on the VC Corner Australian Cemetery Memorial, Fromelles. In 2008 a burial ground was located at Pheasant Wood, France containing the bodies of 250 British and Australian soldiers including Pte Perry. All of the remains were reburied in the newly created Fromelles (Pheasant Wood) Military Cemetery. At the time of the official dedication of the new cemetery on 19 July 2010, ninety-six of the Australians had been identified through a combination of anthropological, archaeological, historical and DNA information. Work is continuing on identifying the other remains relocated from the burial ground and buried in the new cemetery as unknown soldiers. Pte Perry is among those who have not been identified and his name remains on the VC Corner Australian Cemetery Memorial.

Trooper
9th Light Horse Regiment
Born 17 February 1875 at Wilpena North, South Australia
Son of Charles Bending POWELL & Polly nee WARD
Occupation prior to enlistment old farmer and grazier from Adelaide, South Australia
Enlisted on 20 October 1915. He embarked for overseas from Melbourne on 13 April 1915 aboard HMAT Wiltshire. The light horse were considered unsuitable for the initial operations at Gallipoli, but were subsequently deployed without their horses. The 9th LHR landed in late May 1915 and was the reserve regiment for the Brigade's disastrous attack on the Nek on 7 August, and subsequently suffered 50 per cent casualties attacking Hill 60 on 27 August. Exhausted and under-strength, the 9th LHR then played a defensive role until it finally left the peninsula on 20 December 1915. Back in Egypt, in March 1916, the 9th LHR joined the forces defending the Suez Canal from a Turkish drive across the Sinai Desert. The Turks were turned at Romani. Although it didn't take part in the actual battle, the 9th LHR was involved in the advance that followed the Turks' retreat back across the desert. Trooper Baxter was killed in action on 9 August 1916 and buried half a mile south of Hod Bada, Egypt.
After the war, his remains were moved to the Kantara War Memorial Cemetery, on the eastern side of the Suez Canal, 160 kilometres north east of Cairo, Egypt.

On reaching the final objective he organized a section and pushed forward to a trench about 300 yards in advance, which he cleared of the enemy. He was responsible for the capture of seven officers and 80 other ranks, which, owing to the rapidity of his movements, were captured in dug-outs. He did fine work."
