His companion was wounded and evacuated early on the morning of the 31st August. Sapper Nickolls continued his duties alone for a period of 15 hours without rest. The cable he had to patrol ran across country which was subject to an almost continuous barrage from the enemy. The line was continuously out and Sapper Nickolls was kept fully employed in repairing same under heavy enemy artillery fire until he became completely exhausted. It was undoubtedly due to his perseverance, devotion to duty and disregard for personal safety that a valuable line was successfully maintained during the operations.”

Pte Lewis Norman enlisted at Keswick, SA, on 25 July 1915 and embarked with the 11th Reinforcements of the 10th Battalion, on 27 September 1915. Pte Norman was transferred to the 50th Battalion on 26 February 1916. Later promoted to the rank of sergeant, he was taken prisoner of war by German troops on 2 April 1917 during the 13th Australian Infantry Brigade's successful though costly Australian attack on German positions at Noreuil. Sgt Norman was captured and interned at Limburg, Germany, and then Stammlager Friedrichsfeld, where he remained until his repatriation to England on 26 December 1918. He reverted to the rank of Corporal in September 1918, and returned to Australia on 10 April 1919. After enlisting with the AIF on 28 March 1916, 1958 Private Ernest Norman embarked from Adelaide on 28 March 1916 with the 3rd Reinforcements of the 50th Battalion. Pte Norman was killed in action on 2 April 1917 during the 13th Australian Infantry Brigade's attack on Noreuil, the same battle in which his brother was taken prisoner.
