All of the remains were reburied in the newly created Fromelles (Pheasant Wood) Military Cemetery. At the time of the official dedication of the new cemetery on 19 July 2010, ninety-six of the Australians had been identified through a combination of anthropological, archaeological, historical and DNA information. Work is continuing on identifying the other remains relocated from the burial ground and buried in the new cemetery as unknown soldiers. Pte Magor is among those who have not been identified and his name remains on the VC Corner Australian Cemetery Memorial. Although the image shows Pte Magor wearing a Lance Corporal stripe, his service record contains no details of promotion to that rank.

MARTIN, John Roy Alexander
Service No 1352
Born 24 Sep 1891 at Laura, S.A.
Son of Alexander MARTIN & Maude Martha WITCOMB
Roy and older brother Edward Broughton MARTIN SN 594 worked for Broken Hill Associated Smelters, Port Pirie when they enlisted in 1914 and were posted to 12 Battalion AIF. They were among the first ashore at Gallipoli 25th April 1915.
12 July 1915 the incompetent British Major General Hunter-Weston attempted for the third time to seize Achi Baba in the south. That same day at Anzac Cove a diversionary attack was aimed at drawing Turkish troops away from Hunter-Weston’s attack. Both Edward and Roy were wounded on this date most probably in the diversionary attack.
Edward received wounds to the face and eye but did not leave the Battalion, Roy was wounded in the head by a gunshot entering through the left jaw; he was evacuated to Malta then England and repatriated to Australia 7 Nov 1915. The wounding of the 2 men was reported in the Register 10 August 1915 page 6, column 1: Pt. E B MARTIN 594 12 Bat (Port Pirie West), Pt. R J MARTIN 1352 12 Bat (Port Pirie West) disembarked at Malta.
Edward survived Gallipoli and was shipped to France, 8 Apr 1917 Edward was reported by 3 Field Ambulance to have shell wounds to the shoulder region. 12 Apr 1917 he was transferred to 9 General Hospital with reported gunshot wound; back spine.
The Hospital Matron wrote responding to a request from Maude for more information: “He was admitted to this hospital on April 12th severely wounded in the chest. This shell also fractured the spine so that he was paralysed from the shoulders downwards. Edward passed away on the 21st April.

Roy died March 15th 1957

Pte Mehaffey embarked in Adelaide on 27 October 1915 as an acting Corporal with the 11th Reinforcements to the 10th Battalion bound for Egypt and on arrival was promoted to Acting Sergeant. When the AIF was re-organised in early 1916 he was transferred to the 50th Battalion, he reverted to the ranks, although he was quickly promoted to Corporal and sailed with the 50th Battalion on 5 June 1916 on board HMT Arcadian bound for Marseilles. After arrival in France he was promoted Sergeant on 9 July 1916. On 2 April 1917 Sgt Mehaffey was first reported as missing in action, amended to killed in action, when the details of his death in fighting on the outskirts of the French village of Noreuil were eventually reported. It is recorded in his file; "Buried in Australian Military Cemetery on outskirts of village and big cross erected by the Battalion." It is likely his grave was destroyed in subsequent fighting as today Sgt Mehaffey has no know grave. His name is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial at Villers Bretonneux, France. In the Roll of Honour circular completed by his mother she recorded that his brother, Pte C.W. Mehaffey, 6th Field Ambulance, was killed in Belgium the same year on 5 November 1917.
