JAMES, William Harold

Picture
Service no. 3369
10th Infantry Battalion
Born 21 Feb 1896 the second of three children to Thomas JAMES and Eleanor Jane CHARD of Coromandel Valley spent his early years working the market garden with his parents.
On 23rd March 1915, age 19, Harold enlisted for active service with the 10th Infantry Battalion 9-12 reinforcements, (SN 3369). He embarked on HMAT BENALLA 27th Oct. 1915 for France. The 10th amalgamated into the 50th Battalion suffered heavy losses between Aug.13th – 15th 1916 in the battle for Monquet Farm. Harold was promoted Corporal then to Sergeant on the 27th August 1916 in the field “to complete establishment” i.e. cover losses.
Harold was reported Killed In Action in France on 2nd April 1917 at Noreuil during action to “mop up” outlying villages as the German Army retreated to the Hindenburg Line. Intelligence information had incorrectly advised that the Noreuil village was poorly defended.
His mother Eleanor’s grief at the loss of her only son was compounded when his effects were sent to the mother of Sgt. William John James (KIA 2nd April, 1917 at Noreuil) in Broken Hill.
A memorial service was held for Wm. Harold JAMES at the Coromandel Valley Baptist Church.
Four months later through a letter, he had written Harold was identified by the Red Cross as a Prisoner Of War.  Whilst interned at Limburg Harold’s health deteriorated. He returned to Australia and was discharged in 1919.
