Arthur Leslie Edson was born in Broken Hill, enlisted at Port Victoria and 19 years of age and was a plumber.
He was the son of John Edson and the the step brother of Albert Bamblett (32 Btn) and step son to Minnie Edson (Alberts mother)  He enlisted in September of 1915 (along with Albert) and left for overseas in Feb 1916 (along with Albert) aboard HMAT Miltiades.
Arthur was Killed in Action in July 1918 .
Having lost their sons - John and Minnie moved to Waikerie in the Riverland shortly after the war.
Killed in Action 4th July 1918 aged 21 years.

A 35 year old navvy from Parkside, South Australia when he enlisted and embarked for overseas from Melbourne on 25 May 1916 aboard HMAT Warilda. 
Born 14 August 1879 near Hoyleton, South Australia
Son of Frederick Daniel EDWARDS & Frances Ann nee EAST
While serving in France, he was taken ill on a number of occasions and returned to Australia on 5 June 1917. He was discharged medically unfit for further service on 30 November 1917. 
Died 11 August 1964 at Daw Park, South Australia.  Aged 85 years.
This is one of a series of photographs taken by the Darge Photographic Company which had the concession to take photographs at the Broadmeadows and Seymour army camps during the First World War. In the 1930's, the Australian War Memorial purchased the original glass negatives from Algernon Darge, along with the photographers' notebooks. The notebooks contain brief details, usually a surname or unit name, for each negative. The names are transcribed as they appear in the notebooks.

He was killed 3 September 1916 in France, aged 41, and is buried at 516 Bouzincourt Ridge Cemetery, Albert, France.

EKINS, Ashley Kent

Enlisted on 4 September 1914.
He embarked for overseas as a Private from Adelaide on 23 October 1914 aboard HMAT Port Lincoln. After landing at Gallipoli in May 1915, he was wounded in action in Monash Valley but recovered and saw further action in France with the 13th Light Horse Regiment. He was promoted to Corporal and was awarded the Military Medal (MM): "In connection with operations south west of Vermand on 7 September 1918, this NCO led a patrol across open country under heavy flanking machine gun fire. He successfully reached his objective, and reconnoitred the position, being all the time under heavy fire, and returned with valuable information. Not being satisfied with this, he moved out along to obtain further information, his horse being wounded, he pushed forward on foot, and accomplished his mission". Cpl Ekins arrived back in Australia on 2 December 1918 and was discharged from the AIF in January 1919.

EKINS, George Leonard

An accountant before enlisting in June 1915, Pte Ekins left Australia for England with the 16th Reinforcements in March 1916, and was transferred to the 27th Battalion. Arriving in France for service on the Western Front in December 191e6, Pte Ekins was was promoted to Lance Corporal (LCpl) and was transferred to the 2nd Division Gas Section in March 1917. LCpl Ekins was was evacuated to England suffering from pleurisy in July 1917 and rejoined the 27th Battalion with the rank of Corporal (Cpl) in France in March 1918. In May 1918, Cpl Ekins was attached to the 7th Brigade Headquarters, where he remained for the rest of the war. Cpl Ekins returned to Australia in July 1919 and was discharged from the AIF in November 1919.

There he contracted influenza and typhoid and was transferred to hospital in Malta. On recovery, he was transferred briefly to the 10th Battalion but rejoined the 32nd Battalion in 20th October 1916. 
Date and place of death and place of Burial
Alec was wounded in action, receiving gunshot wounds to his arms and legs during the Battle of the Somme on 3rd Nov 1916 and died the following day, aged 22.
Alec is buried in Heilly Station Cemetary (Plot V, Row F, Grave No 1) in Mericort-L'Abbe, France. 
This is the only photograph known by the family to exist of Alec and was enlarged from a tiny photograph in a locket worn by his sister, Mrs Flora Coffey.

A labourer from Rosewater, SA prior to enlistment Tpr Ellis embarked with the 11th Light Horse Regiment from Brisbane on 2 June 1915 on HMAT Medic. After transferring to the Camel Corps he was killed in action on 28 March 1918. After originally being buried near where he fell, his body was re-interred in the Damascus Commonwealth War Cemetery following the Armistice. Two brothers, 589 Pte Harold Percy Ellis and 130 Trooper (Tpr) Herbert John Ellis were also killed during the war.

A brass moulder from Rosewater, SA prior to enlistment, Pte Ellis embarked with E Company from Hobart on 20 October 1914 on HMAT Geelong. On 25 July 1916 he was killed in action and is commemorated on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial. Two brothers, 500 Trooper (Tpr) Fred Bertram Ellis and 130 Tpr Herbert John Ellis were also killed during the war.

Information was received on January 19 by Mr. Edwin Ellis (managing director of Ellis, Limited, in Adelaide) that his youngest son, Pte. Hartley Ellis, had died from pneumonia at the military camp at Heliopolis, Egypt. Deceased, who was in the nineteenth year of his age, enlisted with the 8th Field Ambulance, and left Australia about three months ago. He was of fine physique, and was popular because of his genial disposition and manly character. After having been educated at the Grote Street School, the Adelaide High School, and the School of Mines, he entered the employ of Ellis, Limited.

A labourer from Rosewater, SA prior to enlistment, Tpr Ellis embarked from Adelaide on 22 October 1914 on HMAT Port Lincoln. On 7 August 1915 he died of illness and was buried in the Alexandria (Chatby) Military War Memorial and Cemetery, Egypt. Two brothers, 500 Tpr Fred Bertram Ellis and 589 Private (Pte) Harold Percy Ellis were killed in action.

Lt Ellis was born in South Australia and educated in Australia and New Zealand.
Born 13 October 1886 at Benara near Mount Gambier
Son of Thomas Chute ELLIS & Agnes nee WILLIAMS 

He studied medicine at Otago University, NZ, and gained further degrees whilst attending London Hospital from 1908 to 1910. He returned to Australia in 1911 where he became a managing partner of Burrabogie Station, Hay, NSW. In 1915 he returned to England where he offered his services to the London Hospital, and when he was unable to obtain a position, joined the Royal Artillery. 
On 6 June 1917 Lt Ellis died of wounds received at Messines. He was aged 30.

A labourer prior from Adelaide, SA prior to enlistment, L Cpl Elsdon embarked with the rank of Private with A Company from Melbourne aboard HMAT Armadale on 20 January 1915. He was killed in action on 19 April 1917 and was initially buried near to where he fell. Following the Armistice his remains were reportedly exhumed and re-interred in the Gaza War Cemetery, however subsequent investigation by the Imperial War Graves Commission showed this to be incorrect and he is commemorated on the Jerusalem Memorial.

Appointed a 2nd Lieutenant on 17 March 1916, he returned to Australia on 3 February 1919 as a Captain. 
Captain English also served during the Second World War from 18 June 1940 until 31 July 1946 in the Intelligence Corps in South Australia.

A tram conductor prior to enlisting in January 1916, Pte Evans embarked from Adelaide on Board HMAT Afric (A19) on 9 June 1916. In England in September 1916 he was transferred briefly to the 16th Battalion. Pte Evans, however, left for France with the 43rd Battalion in November 1916. Throughout 1917 the 43rd Battalion fought in Flanders and took part in the battles of Messines and Ypres. On 27 December 1917, Pte Evans died of wounds received the previous day at Bois Grenier, France. He was 27 years of age. 283 Pte Bertie Alfred Evans was the uncle of SX4626 Lieutenant Bert Alfred Evans, 9 Australian Advanced Workshop (enlisted June 1940; discharged February 1946).

Pte Evans leased a farm in South Australia between Warnertown and Crystal Brook with his brother George. When the farm lease expired, he enlisted on 9 March 1916, and embarked from Adelaide on HMAT Commonwealth on 21 September 1916 with the 5th Reinforcements. On 17 December 1916 he was transferred to the 27th Battalion, in which his brother also served, taking the service number 2404B. He was wounded in action on 22 March 1917, and rejoined his battalion on 9 May 1917. He was admitted to hospital on 7 June 1917, and transferred to England with trench fever. After treatment in England, he rejoined his battalion on 26 October 1917. He was wounded a second time on 10 June 1918, and rejoined the battalion once more on 9 August 1918. On 2 September 1918, he was killed in action at Peronne in France, at the age of 33.
